Civil Unions recognised in New Zealand

Civil unions are reasonably recent in New Zealand history. And in New Zealand, we are still living with The Marriage Act of 1955.  It has had some updates over the years, and is due for another update sometime soon.

In a recent online meeting with Registrar General, Russell Bernard, and his colleague Vaughan Miller, members of Celebrants Aotearoa were updated about civil unions that are recognised in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, it turns out that civil unions are recognised from these places only: Finland, Germany, United Kingdom, New Jersey and Vermont, USA.

And here’s what they are called:

Finland -Registered partnership

Germany - Life partnership

United Kingdom - Civil partnership

New Jersey, USA - Domestic partnership

Vermont, USA - Civil union

I am pleased to be able to offer both types of unions, as a marriage and civil union celebrant.
